Congo Natty - Mega Post (new links)

thanks to Marlon, the entire discography is now available. i would avoid anything past 1999 though, because even if "No Sell Out" is the name of one of his tunes, that is indeed what he did - to exactly the kind of boring repetitive lazy D'n'B sound i railed against below. links in comments.

switching gears a bit - first things first, let's get one thing straight:

FUCK NU-SKOOL DRUM'N'BASS.

the likes of Diesel Boy and their boring repetitive BULLSHIT beats-for-pre-teen-Meth-abusers should be all put to sleep like rabid dogs. I draw the line at around the turn of the century - Tech Itch, Optical, Dom n Roland and all that Techstep was the last of the D'n'B that was worth anything. their new output should be avoided -- much like Panacea, who made such brilliantly invigorating Terror-Steppin' Hate-Core as a fat kid, but now that he's a metro-sexual makes the cheesiest Euro-rave crap complete with migrane inducing diva vocals. I guess Drum'n'bass is pretty much dead, apart from the Break-Core movement where artists like Enduser and Soundmurderer are taking cues from the kinda shit I'm presenting here and adding IDM and industrial flavors.

ORIGINAL JUNGLISTS REPRESENT.

roughly 93 to 2001: listening to these tracks one can imagine how exciting this new sound was - the stop'n'go dynamics, the switching between beat patterns, the ragga MC's... yet it sounds as fresh today as 10 years ago.

Congo Natty is a British posse who has always refused to play in the United States. and it follows that none of their very important and influential output is available in America - Amazon doesn't even know they exist.

a while ago I stumbled upon a HUGE Russian FTP full of reggae and related material; knowing that it wasn't going to last forever, I grabbed as much as I could, literally waking up in the middle of the night to pull more files. and just as I thought, 3 days later it was over - they started using password protection. but am I glad that I was able to score this pile of Congo Natty LPs and 12"s. I present all of it here for your boomin' selection.

a bit of an overkill I know, with 4 12 inch collections and 4 albums, but you'd be hard pressed to find a single weak track in all this. the earlier the better though, toward the millenium even this crew got a little lazy - but still sounds ace. if you had to start somewhere I would do the fifth file below, Congo Natty vs tenor fly - 12 Years Of_Jungle.

The Singles and 12" collections include: Binghi Man, Boom Bye Bye/Lion Did Crown, Champion DJ, Gritty City/Sunshine, Lose Your Soul/Rebel Music, Ras Tena/Make A Joyful Noise, Seven Seas/Ghetto Life, Black Star Liner, and more.

spark up the schism and get nice to this... booyakasha!

if you keep dropping hot, "vintage"(? is this vintage now ? i remember the days....) stuff like this you'll keep getting gleeful comments from me. I thought i knew enough about drum n bass (and most other extinct rave music from the 90s) but there are gems buried out there. so what if it's an abrupt 180 from yesterday?

yeah! so what! :)

Thanks so much for uploading this! I had no idea that congo natty did so many tracks - I used to absolutely love "junglist" when it came out in 1995 (?), but haven't kept up with their other releases.

Ya man, I hear you. I was real into it when it busted out as an underground movement. Everybody saw it as the 'new jazz'!

That was a good era, now I just cringe when I hear the cliched standardized form that it became, the new 'Johnny B. Goode' or Smoke On The Water' as far as my bodily reaction.

(? is this vintage now ? i remember the days....)

lol! No shit, hard to believe how many musical eras I have lived through now (it wasn't called 'classic' rock when I was listening to it ;-).

I got my first Terry Riley record when I was ten years old, 'Artificial Intelligence' still sounds new to me, and 'glitch hop' is just another word of what that same Terry Rily record sounds like after 36 years of play!

Me happy! There's an awful lot of stuff in there that I don't know. Couldn't agree more about the tedium that is d'n'b post-98 (I'd actually argue that it slowly started to wane after 96). diesel boy surely is one of the biggest offenders alongside the likes of bad company or pendulum (probably the worst of the lot).

breakcore/raggacore doesnt do it for me though. Too unfunky and bordering on wanky, what with showing off how hyper-fast and super complex you can make your breakbeats. the interesting thing about jungle was that the rhythms were so weird and jerky, yet incredibly funky in a fucked up way. You felt compelled to dance and at the same time you were like, "How is anybody supposed to dance to this???" Most breakcore leaves the funkiness out of the equation and ends up with a selfserving noise-fest of gabber-speed beat wankery.

Even the more interesting stuff like Soundmurderer gets on my nerves after 15 minutes. It's music that's a bit like porn: by reproducing only the most hysterically euphoric, high energy aspects of old skool jungle it's like a hardcore video with one cumshot scene after another. No sexiness, no teasing, no foreplay. There's also a revisionist tendency to remove the house-influenced, rave-y and "girlish" aspects of a lot of classic jungle and to focus mainly on the noisy, dark and aggressive side of things. (I'm all for cheesy diva vocals, panacea just isn't very good at using them imo)

Anyway, enough ranting. Thanks a lot for this awesome post (and for all the other great music on your blog too, of course).

hey square-dancer,

many parrallels between our stance on jungle and what many people feel about new Hiphop (southern or whatever) versus Golden Age. but there is a lot more new Hiphop I bump than new DB though.

you know, there were a moment or 2 that I've enjoyed Bad Company, a couple of older tracks had the right bass lines and the sheer relentlessness sort of pushed them over the edge, made them stand out from all the other DB by numbers. I mean, repetition is just a means to an end, and if used intellegently can be very effective - the problem is people get lazy and blindly repeat things ad nauseum, without thought.

agree with break-core being un-sexy and un-funky... but I like it a lot, there is a side of me that is really adrenalin / testosterone... love the blackest and heaviest of metal for instance.

I'm actually not very schooled on early jungle at all... there were other essential crews like Congo Natty I'm not aware of and surely loads of strains and styles I don't know. those comps you posted were fucking great, and if you can continue to enlighten, by all means do. cheers!

bleeding lordamercy! you are a beauty! a bigtime beauty!! many thanks for all this quality congo natty shit

.. i was at a festival up the hill from me last weekend, & on the fourth night i danced (i was gonna say stomped, but that shits for the darkstep heavy stuff, suppose it was more of a hectic frantic throw the feet & body moves to every goddam beat sorta stylee!) my feckin nuts off in a old WWII bunker to some oldschool raggajungle from the early vaults! - one of the best nights of my life.

.. as for your debate here on the merits of old v new .. my 2 cents .. old junglist style rules! .. i loved rollin stuff like early Ed Rush/Optical/Andy C (the memories are flowing back, a grin spreading across my face) .. i loved the early Panacea, early Bad Company, early dieselboy, .. i dunno, they seem to try too hard these days - too much production, glitter & shine .. as for Pendulums stadium rock style & Fresh's recent shit - makes me weep (ok it obviously doesn't, but it'll do!)

i'm liking the live bands though .. i've seen Epoc, Obedient Bone, Barnaby Ray Quartet, The Heavies, & some i cannae remember the name of ... all had female vocalists, some nice tunes, & some proper heavy drum madness (one had 2 sets of drums that drummed along with a dj spinning nastiness - crazy wobbly stomping!)

right, ive written lots & i can't be bothered re-reading it to see if it makes any sense!! ... i'll be back ;)

(i've got loads n loads of old jungle tunes - i'll get 'em up sometime soonish .. i have plenty of other dnb online too - i'll see whats what & get back

peace out

I can totally see were you're coming from with regards to breakcore, confucius. Weird thing is, while I like a lot of really aggressive, thrashing rock music and love early hardcore like Black Flag, Minor Threat or SOA, when it comes to dance music I really have a problem when it's almost exclusively a boys' thang. Maybe it's also to do with me still clinging to the vision/narrative of raves and dance clubs as this kind of communal thing, so I don't like to see most women getting driven away from the dancefloor.

Also, I think with newer hiphop styles like Crunk and Hyphy there is a weird tension going on between a brute, violent ultra-masculinity and a slinky, albeit pretty rough and twisted funkyness. I guess this also applies to a lot of dancehall and classic jungle. In each case the result of this tension is a music that's as dark and threatening as it is seductive. And it usually gets both boys and girls on the floor.

But I guess my real issue with breakcore and most latter day d'n'b is rather that it doesn't so much sound male (speaking in terms of gender of course), but most of it sounds so boyish in a quite technocratic way. Actually, I somehow imagine most producers of this music as being rather fey and nerdy (in other words, much like myself, come to think of it...)

Also, for all its relentless energy I don't feel breakcore generating any intensity. It's like all the energy just implodes and disappears in a void. No sparks, no friction, no rush. Just numbness and exhaustion instead. But probably that's just me and I'm only trying to justify/rationalize my physical reaction to the music.

Sorry if it all reads a bit incoherent and rambling. I also wanted to comment on your rather interesting golden age hiphop-comparison, but I'd better get some sleep now. Anyway, there will sure be some more jungle/early d'n'b on my blog in the near future.

@ MrC: Don't know any of those live bands, have to check them out some time.

Peace yo, I'm off to sleep ;)

Hi all,
Like a disillusioned lover of pre-98 drum n bass, I gotta say - there is still funk in the music - check this:

http://tgv.jungletrain.net/sr13/

particularly recommend the set by the guy called dgohn - moody, atmospheric, break-beat driven drum n bass that has nothing in common with the junk that entertains kids on pills in clubs these days

There are a lot of new labels and artists pushing these kinds of sounds - with funk, with energy, with MUSICAL content - at the same time doing something new, not just rehashing old ideas.
