Showbiz & AG - Good Fellas [NEW LINK]

a lost treasure of golden-age (early 90s) east-coast hiphop:

what ever label disputes or personal beef has kept this one in the vault and from being re-issued, it is a crime against headz world wide (and humanity at large).

I can use a cliche-ridden combination of geek-speak and street-slang to try to describe the inherent dopeness (see what I mean?) of the production, straight illness (again) of the beats, and the clever lyrics that will have you smile as your head is nodding - "the mail-man don't have what I'm deliverin', Robin don't know about the hood I live in" - or you can just download it and see for yourself. shit is un-fuckwithable.

if you don't like it there's no money-back guarantee but I'll gladly come over and slap you silly for your wack inability to recognize.

here is Amazon listing: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000003R5L/sr=8-2/qid=1146434774/ref=pd_bbs_2/102-1053499-0535339?%5Fencoding=UTF8

thanks to original uploader - don't know who it was but I downloaded it a while back from smokingsection.net

so if you didn't know before i guess you do now.

Emmanuelle Bertrand - Music for Cello [NEW LINK]

the single most mindblowing and pleasurable solo Cello recording I have ever heard - there are contenders but none really come close - the richness of timbres, dexterity of hand, fluidity in the handling of super technically challenging passages - breathtaking and endlessly enjoyable.

what drew me first to this was the great label - Harmonia Mundi, name of the composer Gyorgy Ligetti, and then immediately the photo of this very young and very charming (HOT) Cellist in a... leather jacket? and the setting seems to be... a pub?? after hearing this I ofcourse researched some of her other albums and, I very well may be wrong but, it seems like this is the golden recording after which she went on to make much less exciting records.

BBC Music Magazine - "Her performance, taped in the composer’s presence, is arresting and naturally authoritative. She’s excellent, too, in the fearsomely demanding Henze Serenade, one of the most rewarding yet technically baffling works in the literature, and Bertrand’s account of the George Crumb Sonata is bettered only by Frans Helmerson’s definitive BIS version.

The Ligeti Sonata, with its seemingly unplayable final Capriccio, is a virtuoso tour de force, and Bertrand succeeds magnificently in making sense of this unrelentingly elusive though masterful work. Finally, she’s no less convincing in Nicolas Bacri’s Suite No. 4, written especially for her...this is a triumph. Highly recommended." Performance FIVE STARS Sound FOUR STARS

Nicolas Bacri - Suite n°4 op.50
George Crumb - Sonate
Henri Dutilleux - Trois strophes sur le nom de SACHER
Hans Werner Henze - Sérénade
György Ligeti - Sonate

Gamelan _ Java Instrumental [NEW LINK]

Sunda refers to the aproximate western third region of the Island of Java. the Gamelan Degung, a princely music used for ceremonies in the courts, dates back to the 17th century, but has its roots in much older tradtions.

Sundanese Gamelan is characterized by a trademark sense of beautiful melody, coupled with a suble, crystaline aproach to poly-rhythmic complexity. the midrange bell tones are somewhat akin to a xylophone, with gorgeous flute melodies flying high above, and underpinned below by the awesome quakes of a majestic bass gong (same effect as the diving "hoover-bass" of jungle).

a nocturnal, other-worldly mood pervades on this disc; much more than mere "pretty" in the conventional sense, this music can go from heart-breaking to outright sinister - often at the same time. just play track 7 with the volume up and the lights dimmed...

hello goosebumps.

studio mix _ Submarine (electronic)

a sub-aquatic weave of instrospective, minimalist pulses, this other-worldly mix navigates the less traveled realms of left-field electronica and oceanic dub-techno. moving with determination and clarity of mind, guided by a logic both alien and intuitive, Submarine is sparse by design, yet rich in tonality.

this list of artists was made in hindsight, may not be accurate, and is missing a few entries (if anyone can help me correct the mistakes and fill in the blanks it would be appreciated).

studio mix _ Road Kill (grime)

this one delivers some seroius kicks, is not for the weak, and might be useful as an introduction to the genre, which I do believe is the most exciting urban sound in the 21st century. for those who don't know about Grime yet: imagine super-aggressive MC's shouting in thick Cockney accents over slammin lo-fi beats and electronic melodies - some have referred to the sound as a combination of hiphop, 2-step garage, jungle, techno, and dancehall.

Road Kill contains a few tracks from the few big releases available in the US (Dizzee, Wiley, Kano) but mostly from an awesome collection of tunes spanning 2003 - 2005 a friend from London graciously hooked me up with (for all I know he literally bought them from the trunk of some dude's car).

with Grime you can't do much in terms of tricked out mixing back'n'forth and layering (just wait until you hear the other mixes ;) but it is still pretty much "seamless" or atleast flows along well, and with some serious thought to the track programing.

boom, boom, brrrrrrrrrrrap!

hello world

I will be using this space to post some of my Dj mixes, each focusing on a specific sound or cluster of related genres.

as well as sharing amazing music which needs exposure or is impossibly rare, such as the 1970s Gamelan recordings on Ocora, or La Monte Young's "Well Tuned Piano" box set.

and random rants, raves, and observations about the state of our fucked up world (along with the constant possiblity of beauty and transcendence within it).
