ABQ Trio

uncompromising new improvised music from what appears to be a new band with electronics, piano, violin, etc. electro-acoustic soundscapes and sick sick piano, broken violin heart strings and music boxes of the apocalypse. is it me or are more and more post-jazz improvisers and electro-acoustic people warming to, flirting with, making use of electronic beats? i think it can be very interesting to marry these 2 opposite aesthetic tendencies (or at least traditionally delineated as such) which involve diametrically opposed procedural philosophies: the "live" and unpredictable world of improvisation and that of the "soul-less" drum machine. has to be of course judged case by case and in this one i think it is a fruitful combination - that first track is a monster... if i was a lazy (read: underpaid) music journalist i would say the Necks jamming with Throbbing Gristle.

Terry Riley - Poppy Nogood / Last Camel in Paris

5 excerpts which comprise a 40 minute recorded document of Riley's late 60s Reichian tape loops manipulated live soprano saxophone mind expanding psychic furniture re-arranging stream of consciousness cut up meta-concrete time lag accumulating all night solo concerts reissued by the Cortical Foundation, with artwork, in the form of a fold out poster which surely does the original little justice, by the perhaps equally visionary visual artist Bruce Conner (stroke of genius on the part of label) and now again out of print. a glimpse into a psychedelic puzzle vision of infinite cosmic proportions so mesmerizing and psycho-actively ahead of its time the world will not catch up in another 3 centuries. brought to you by the tigers of love.

and a brighter, perhaps more "accessible" album: taken from a live recording at the Theatre Edouard VII in Paris from November 10th, 1978, Riley plays on a solo organ that has been modified to handle four channels - two live and two delayed, and tuned in just intonation.
