Clip'd Mokira

Here is the first Mokira (aka Andreas Tilliander) album, "Cliphop" (very descriptive title!) from the Static series on Raster-Noton, circa 2000. One of the earliest releases that slips into the Clicks + Cuts genre of laptoppery. Simple, funky glitch, and that is about all. Essential by most definitions of the word.

I did not feel this at all at the time when it came out... was pretty much the only one on the "electro-static" series that I didn't like.

maybe it's time for a revisit to gleam what I might have missed...

I can up "Plee" tonight if you need a point of comparison. I'm still unsure if this style is totally left where it was six years ago - we get so many genres of laptop each year...

plee was not one of my faves either... I guess Tillander in general may not be my cup of clicks.

but speaking of "Clip Hop" -- what I do have, which is a shocking bag of sick, mentalist, absolutely evil fucking cats, is the Alva Noto / Ikeda collaboration. forget the title but it's something like "Clip Hop"

they collaborated as "Cyclo" (artist and album)- which I don't have, but have heard, and those boys get DOWN.

re Tilliander - his pace has always been very "chillout room" (w/the exception of the "World Industries" album), sometimes "nothing happens" - I remember one track on Plee that is almost 10' long and thinking "this isn't really necessary." Under his own name he released "Ljud" (on M-P) which was strikingly similar.

however, I do think he's on his own trip, he's taken an edge off of his glitch/click and added a little space that, occasionally, points towards a warmth or melacholy. I don't always love this, but it is an interesting work from a time that is almost history. which I think the Clicks + Cuts comps documented well...hm...those discs are filled with cats....

I still like Cliphop, although my favorite Mokira album is FFT POP.
The new Mokira release "Hateless" is more noise and no beats.

The new Tilliander stuff is Techno or so.

Niceness

I enjoyed FFT POP very much, short and elegant. The last two Andreas Tilliander releases I have, "World Industries" and "Dutty & Digital" are also great, but definitely where he has put his techno styles. He did a CD for called "Ease" for Swedish fashion designer Filippa K's store. I'm not always sure of my stance on his music, it seems to be very immediate, and if you miss that moment...
