Mitchell Akiyama - Mort Aux Vaches

continuing with the ambient, abstract vibe, here is another very special recording in the excellent Mort Aux Vaches series from the Stalplaat label by this unusually talented young half japanese Canadian - a single 45 minute piece which uses processed acoustics and digital sound generation to form a grand tapestry of... of what? remembrance? forgetfulness? hope? despair? whatever it is, it's full of nuance and breath-taking.

Nice to see a Stalplaat offering, as you have intimated, there are artists out there connecting the wires and digits to heart and soul, I find it very intimate music and appreciate you exposing me to the albums I have not gotten to yet. Given Forced Exposure is one of the few sources I have and have the often frustratingly long wait between ordering and fulfillment for releases I can only judge by short textual descriptions and the occasional post-structuralist dissertations in Wire, it really helps me identify those artists that would really interest me to hear them here. Keep up the great work!

thanks so much for communcating. it means a lot to me.

yes Forced or Wire, while being good sources, can not always be trusted, especially the former. and even Wire have been completely off before.

I only want to share things that I feel are so amazing and so rewarding and enriching that they absolutely need to be shared. and I'm glad that you appreciate it.

I enjoyed this very much... thanks for your efforts... and the comments about the Wire are interesting... I've been reading it since it started but although it is almost essential in trying to keep track of things out in the world- that 'dissertational' element to some of the writing that loopy c mentions can obscure the music sometimes...

What's the common theme or thread with the 'Mort' series, other than VPRO?
The first one I've ever heard was Don Joyce's 'We'll Be Right Back' and since then erroneously thought they were all thematically tied.
Thanks for sharing that, it's fascinating.

what does VPRO mean?

other than the title: Death to the (holy) Cows, which is some kind of generalized, un-examined, and largely meaningless attempt at drawing a connection between the work of these musicians and Parisian art movements of early last century, I see no thematic cohesion. it's just a lot of good music, innit

"Mort aux vaches" is actually an old french idiom which means "death to the police"... May that help you to find a link ? Cheers. Chenard Walcker

maybe the surrealists got the slogan from the old french saying? according to Freetranslation.com Vaches mean Cows.

I think they were referring to the cops (or union busters, or whatever) as 'cows' like how in the US we refer to policemen as 'pigs'. I think it iplies that they are stupid and obedient animals.
VPRO was the Dutch radio station that commissions the Mort Aux Vaches series, where I think they originally broadcast them.
I have put up the Don Joyce album at my blog.
