ablaze - global boom boom mix

summer is around the corner, here is the party mix which spans 5 continents and 10 countries. the same irresistable beat can be found around the world - from Egyptian Pop to Dancehall, from Algerian Rai to Bhangra, from Reggaeton to French Hiphop. when i listen to fiery dance music from all these seemingly disparate places, the worst homogenizing multi-culti cliches become undeniable, beautiful truths: we DO share common ancestry, our cultures ARE products of cross polination, and most importantly, all people everywhere likes to get jiggy.

by the way, if anyone is worried, don't be: you won't find luke-warm generic "Asian Beats" type crap or lazy-ass bullshit like Transglobal Underground on this.

note: this is the entire mix as one file. if anyone wants to burn it to CD I can up another version with tracks.

fire!

Mexico - Fiestas of Chiapas and Oaxaca

wonderful disc of traditional music from Nonesuch Explorer series. when i first heard track 1 i thought a plane flew over head when they were recording. but the same sound comes again later in the song - what instrument it is i have no idea... some kind of Mayan Futurism. what follows are a variety of endearing gems - a thousand whispers accompany a candle lit vigil; joyous celebration vibes with children everywhere; sweet dreamy lulabies for when they get tired of dancing to take naps; and of course, a few sad, sad drinking songs that magnificently evoke some heart wrenching, distant woe...

Fiesta!

spectral re-ups and new-ups / phase IV_round 6_part 12A

i have decided, for better or worse, after much debate, careful weighing of pros and cons, and serious thought, to take a methodical, precise, and organized aproach to the Spectral-Re-Up project.

thus below you will find more re-ups of the original 13 albums (in addition to the 4 from a couple of weeks ago), a few re-ups from the second batch of Spectral music on this blog (which appaeared some months after the initial post), and some never before posted recordings. all mixed together.

if anyone is confused by all this... it's OK i am too. enjoy.

Chidambaram-bangbang-boom-chk-boom

this was posted many months ago on SFRP's Ocora label thread, and has been knocking the life out of my speakers ever since. huge props to asterisk for having this absolute diamond in his collection.

the hottest rhythms I've ever heard. period. time signatures moving around like liquid, drums being hit with a true fierceness and precision. given flight by three (I think) master reed players. I don't know much (or anything) about the rituals being performed here, except that I hope they are still going on, loud as ever.

Inde du Sud: Temple de Chidambaram, Periya Melam

"Recordings from 2000-1 and affiliated to the temple of
Chidambaram (dedicated to Shiva but also to Vishnu), the ritual music
ensemble Periya MĂȘlam sounds vibrant and penetrating with its
nagasvaram oboes, tavil drums and talam castanets, the voice of the
gods."
