Rod Poole - The Death Adder (solo guitar in Just Intonation) - NEW LINK APRIL 2012

I've tried to keep the content on this blog limited to the best of the best in any genre. (with the occasional arguable slips - I do not consider "For Christian Wolff" to be the strongest work by Feldman, for instance)

there has also been a few gems of such rare brilliance that they out-shine the (relatively) mere excellent, the garden-variety of amazing... this post is one of these.

Rod Poole came to Los Angeles from England, and has developed a unique and breathtaking style of solo guitar improvisation. the word may actually be misleading here because this is not what Derek Bailey meant by improvisation - the reinvention of each phrase and line - but rather something much more structured, rhythmically even, and meticulously assembled -- flawless and almost overwhelming due to the grandiose scale of these hour long pieces yet seemingly effortless in its perfectly fluid execution... not much of a stretch to compare this music to such dizzying manifestations of the divine as Islamic architecture.

a must for not only enthusiasts of micro-tonal music, this is the kind of thing that, like Vermeer's 36 paintings, will likely stay almost entirely ignored by the world but will be discovered in a few hundred years time and upheld as the pinnacle of artistic achievement.

First of all, most of the twenty four hours, i'm receiving a message
that not free slots to download, and then when there is at least a free slot, I have received a download "speed" of something like
4-5 kb...:-((

mega is ok w/me (I actually got a ridiculously high dl speed this morning 200+ k). again, I'll mention the pop up from "passion.com" reminding me about women seeking men near brooklyn. sometimes it's staten island.

and this recording is definitely a good way to re-arrange one's mind.

Hi Zhao!

It has been already mentioned, but I just want to confirm it: we can not download stuff form Megaupload from Slovakia and Czech republic(and I'm quite sure the same holds for the rest of central/east Europe). I know that Argentina has the same problems! So please, if it is possible and not too inconveniet, prefer some other service. I have good experience w/ Turboupload, and Sendspace works usaully, too. Thanks anyway!

PS: I've tried Tristan Murail's album as you recommended - and I love it! Thanks again!

OK I will re-up to Sendspace. thanks for all the feedback.

Sorry to put my two cents in too, but I'm afraid to say that sendspace is for germany what megaupload might be for eastern europe, it just doesn't work most of the time. everything else is fine. Hmm, so what now?

that is one cool screen name you got there.

how about Turbo then? is everyone happy with Turbo???

or what about speedshare? does people in various parts like speedshare???

Anonymous said...

turbo would make me happy, speedshare likewise. like I said: everything but sendspace, allthough I just found out that it works a little better in the morning. So If you're going with SS perhaps I'll have to change my daily routine and get up early... the stuff you're posting sure is worth it. So thanks for the consideration...and for the posts of course. Especially for this one. It's really great.

Many thanks for this excellent release, Cf. I love this and even went to the trouble to pester Miss Murgatroid when I lived in Portland, thinking she might have backstock of the much-missed Win Records catalog. Silly me. I would love to own a copy of this, but haven't had much luck. Leads?

BTW, did you rip this from an actual cd copy? That in itself would be nice, as the copy I've been wearing out is a deficient rip.

This is a fantastic album. The first I've heard of his solo work - it's amazing stuff. I know of Poole's playing only through the Acoustic Guitar Trio (the other members are Nels Cline and Jim McAuley). By the way, are you familiar with McAuley's CD Gongfarmer 18 (Nine Winds)? It's a wonderful album, released in 2005, I believe, and easy to find. Judging by your posts, it's something you'd probably enjoy hearing.

thanks for tip on McAuley.

Sounds really interesting, any change of updating the sendspace link?

Would be great.

ps. Thanks for the great blog.

Hey, can you repost a link to this, I'm on my knees to hear this. The files are "unavailable". thank you so much for all this wonderful music. You're blog is a gem

new link added.

the legacy of this amazing music needs to be kept alive at all cost.

Can you update the link again? Mediafire currently has permission denied, and claims the file is Alter Bridge - Find The Real.

zhao said...

strange. works fine for me. try again? if not i will up it to another service.

Thanks for the quick response! Yes, I am still getting permission denied, as a redirect to www.mediafire.com/error.php?errno=388&quickkey=3jnaa3atc0u8mxm

It may be due to a USA-specific (spurious) automated copyright claim.
