Stephan Mathieu - Die Entdeckung Des Wetters

they say love is just a combination of chemicals, but maybe it can also be distilled in digital sound. Mathieu's work has always contained a very human warmth and this one perhaps embodies a special tenderness more than others. a collection of commisioned work for various installations and art events (including a major exhibition of Leonardo Da Vinci), the name means "The Discovery of the Weather" in english.

people who say machine music have no soul... lord forgive them because they know not what they speak.

EDIT: Mathieu's work has never dissapointed. the recordings Sad Mac, On Tape, Wurmloch Variationen are all brilliant and very enjoyable. this unofficial album is actually a lesser work in my opinion.

Hi. Cool you like the Mathieu work. Please take down the free album download and instead send people to the label that published it in the first place.

Really liking this, like a frozen glass harmonica thawing through an Aeolin Harp on a minor moon of Saturn ;-) I definitely need to buy up some more Mathieu.

wait... do you write for the Wire? actually on second thought, you don't because your metaphors are too on point.

"wait... do you write for the Wire? "

lol! I do enjoy our 'post comment' dialog, a true sign that art is present methinks ;-)

Blogs like yours are examples of (within the music blog subculture), that, at the point that EVERYTHING becomes available to ALL, it is the 'keepers and disseminators'' of aesthetics and information/knowledge that are the true upper classes and inspirations to culture (a conceptual paraphrase of Herman Hesse's 'Glass Bead Game' if I might be allowed ).

Try again, probably a RS temp outage, it just worked for me.

btw confucius, my remark over at 'White Noise' concerning the Peter Cusack 'Baikel Ice' was certainly informed by my listening session of Stephen and subsequent dialog here.

There seems to be somewhat of a catharsis of thought and feedback system involved with the networked blog shares, listening, and commenting, resulting in a 'long' thought' connecting the various selections which I am definitely thriving on as a composer.

I may have to resurrect my website just to exhibit the pieces coming from this process!

www.luckykitchen.com looks like pretty cool resource.

I do not argue the point made at all, I am certainly interested in purchasing the things that are in print, blogs like this alert me to artists I should check out (and are often not even on my radar) and help me spend my music funds wisely. I am much more inclined to purchase when I have an idea of what a release is like (the Wire sampler CD's being one of my few resources for the kind of music Different Waters seems fluent in.) Too many large purchases with a high number of disappointments in recent years left me unwilling to be as experimental in my buying habits, blogs are re-awakening my interest in owning particular albums, hopefully everyone wins ;-)

Mathieu's work has never dissapointed me. Sad Mac is brilliant as is On Tape. this unofficial album I would say is actually a lesser work.

Thanks for the recommendations, I recently picked up 'frequencylib' from Forced which is very cool (in a loopy way ;-). Given the great difference between the 'Wetters' album and 'freqlib' would you venture an opinion of where 'Sad Mac' and 'On Tape' fall in the spectrum of glitchy ambience and looping concrete he seems to traverse? (Sad Mac certainly brings a connotation of crashing computer detritus with it, I remember a review of 'On Tape' but somehow was left with some question. Thanks

Hmmm, threw int he 'freqlib' CD, funny about first impressions. Actually quite a bit of continuity between this and 'Wetters". Must have been the previous context (I bought it along with some Eckerhard Ehler and John Wall) that left me shy on memory of the more ambient aspects of it.

yeah freq lib is different from the other recordings. it sounds like tapeloops of guitar phrases and pieces. I like it a lot but a friend of mine who otherwise likes Matheiu hates it.

Sad Mac is rich digital pure tones like Wetters, but with more variation and more complex arrangements. includes this gorgeous Satie-esque track toward the end - highly recommended.

On Tape, his reworking of material by the band Tape (though I don't know if it even resembles the original), is one long 45 minute piece - starts with silence and disruptive noises but quickly turns to the sublime. a beautiful listen.

and Wurmloch Variations is made of the most amazingly layered and crafted textures... essential.

Sad Mac uses some to a lot of tones that are closer to recognizable "ambient" music... I think it's an earlier work. think early nineties chill-out, except not boring.

while Wurmloch's sound is entirely more mature and sophisticated.

Loopy C said...

Thanks! That helps a lot ;-)

If you're going to remove the link why not just remove the whole fucking post? What's the point of it if we can't actually hear the album?

Anonymous said...

yes, will wurmloch variations be introduced as well? I agree with the other posters, that with limited funds, blogs such as different waters helps the collector spend wisely on already sampled work. also, for the collector, it is always much cooler to own, and i think most readers of different waters are the serious collector type. i also second removing a link completely if there is not way to hear the music. it's draconian sure but there is nothing worse than knowing about a party and then not being invited to it!

Awesome blog bro but...

"they say love is just a combination of chemicals, but maybe it can also be distilled in digital sound."

that was retarded.
