SHEN - studio mix / mystical minimalism

"In the Zone, nothing is what it seems. Objects change places, the landscape shifts and rearranges itself, it seems as if an unknown intelligence were actively thwarting any attempt to penetrate its borders..."

for those who enjoyed the Submarine mix, this one is maybe even more introspective and ethereal. a Shakuhachi adorns the icy digi-scape of Alva Noto, a Gamelan emerges from Frank Bretschneider's laptop, and the first verses of the koran is backed by Pan Sonic's dungeon beats. the mix reaches further toward the sublime in the second half, and near the end, Cage's prepared piano appears like an apparition.

also features Muslimgauze, Kit Clayton, Gas, etc.

it is also because this mix ended up in the right hands that I'm opening up for Pan Sonic in the upcoming Los Angeles show about a month from now. post comment if interested in attending.

Mitchell Akiyama - Mort Aux Vaches

continuing with the ambient, abstract vibe, here is another very special recording in the excellent Mort Aux Vaches series from the Stalplaat label by this unusually talented young half japanese Canadian - a single 45 minute piece which uses processed acoustics and digital sound generation to form a grand tapestry of... of what? remembrance? forgetfulness? hope? despair? whatever it is, it's full of nuance and breath-taking.

Stephan Mathieu - Die Entdeckung Des Wetters

they say love is just a combination of chemicals, but maybe it can also be distilled in digital sound. Mathieu's work has always contained a very human warmth and this one perhaps embodies a special tenderness more than others. a collection of commisioned work for various installations and art events (including a major exhibition of Leonardo Da Vinci), the name means "The Discovery of the Weather" in english.

people who say machine music have no soul... lord forgive them because they know not what they speak.

EDIT: Mathieu's work has never dissapointed. the recordings Sad Mac, On Tape, Wurmloch Variationen are all brilliant and very enjoyable. this unofficial album is actually a lesser work in my opinion.

Hi. Cool you like the Mathieu work. Please take down the free album download and instead send people to the label that published it in the first place.

Brian Eno - unofficial albums

these albums include work for art projects, exhibitions and installations, sound design for for special events, or just music which for whatever reason were never officially released. unlike the unreleased, rare, or bootlegged material of other artists, which are often second rate, the quality of these works are as high as any of the official recordings, and just as rewarding.

"I Dormienti" sounds like something from around the time of Shuttov Assembly, carefully yet randomly placed sounds including vocal snippets hover in a timeless ether. "Music For Prague" is as far as I can tell for solo piano, monochomatic and elegiac. "White Cube" are pieces for installations, and mostly comprised of grey-scale textured drones. "Textures" is a collection of varied short pieces, some even with beats. "Kite Stories" are luxuriant sun-soaked dreams on a summer afternoon... and "Bell Studies" is what it sounds like, Eno's treatment of sustained bell tones - needless to say: gorgeous.

big-up original uploader Trainwreck on SFRP.

there are a few more out there (like the album "Contra"), if anyone has them feel free to post in comments. cheers.

(note: couldn't find a cover for Music For Prague so I took about 15 seconds and made one - don't be too harsh you design nerds out there)
